The TCS London Marathon is one of the world’s best-known marathons and needs no introduction. For thousands of people, the London Marathon is on their ‘must-do’ list.

Registration fee: £50 (payable if you are offered a charity place)

Minimum sponsorship: £2,500

Winston’s Wish and Child Bereavement UK are merging to strengthen the support available for bereaved children, young people, parents and families across the UK. In the coming weeks, Winston’s Wish will change its name to Child Bereavement UK. By taking part in the London Marathon you will still be raising money to support grieving children, young people and families, but the charity you will be fundraising for will be called Child Bereavement UK.

Hayley’s Story: How Being Supported By Winston’s Wish Inspired Her To Tackle South Wales’ Highest Peak

Hayley Allinson will be donning her hiking boots this Mother’s Day for a sunrise trek up Pen y Fan as she takes part in our Hike for Hope event.

Winston’s Wish is a cause close to Hayley’s heart. After she was bereaved of her mum, Hayley was supported by us in the aftermath. Hayley shares, “I thought it would be a great way to give back to an amazing charity that has helped me when I was younger and also give myself a good distraction on Mother’s Day.

“I always make sure to give myself something to do on big events like Mother’s Day, my mum’s birthday and the anniversary of her death, so that it gives me more time to reflect on happy memories rather than sitting at home and feeling sad. 

“I am looking forward to having that feeling of accomplishment once I have got to the top of Pen y fan. I am yet to venture out in a walk in the rain, but I should practice since Wales is known for its rainy weather! 

“As a day job, I work in a nursery and I work as the SENco so I help children who may have additional needs. What I would like people to know about child bereavement is that everyone goes on a different path.

“Even if they seem like the happiest child in the world and like nothing has happened, they may still be feeling big emotions on the inside but don’t want to share those feelings in fear of adding more stress onto a family who is already stressed.

“Having open and honest conversations with children about their feelings and also your own feelings can help them get through hard times. Also having open conversations with children who haven’t been through bereavement so they are aware of different family situations they may come across, can be great for their understanding.”

Hike for Hope will take place on the 15^th of March, a date many will acknowledge as Mother’s Day.

The event will see intrepid trekkers pick up their hiking boots and take part in a sponsored walk under starlight to enjoy a sunrise finish atop South Wales’ tallest peak, part of the beautiful Bannau Brycheiniog. There is a £25 registration fee and a minimum sponsorship to raise £160.

We recognise that Mother’s Day can be an especially tricky time of year for many bereaved children and young people.

Hayley comments, “Mother’s Day as an adult can be hard but as I have previously said about trying to find distractions on the day, I always go visit my mum’s grave with my dad as a few of our other family members are buried there and lay some flowers down and then we normally go for a walk somewhere.”

Pen y Fan Hike for Hope

Enjoy the sunrise over Pen y Fan as you ‘Hike for Hope’ on Mother’s Day

From the first step to the summit, what better way to celebrate everything about your incredible mum or mother figure by seeing the sun rise at the top of the stunning Pen y Fan, followed by a celebratory drink and tasty treat.

Whether you’re walking to remember your mum or alongside her, you’ll create new memories to cherish for years to come. At the same time, knowing you’ve helped ensure bereaved children and young people don’t have to face grief alone.

By taking on this hike you’re showing bereaved children everywhere that challenges can be faced and that there’s help during the hardest of climbs. So, join us and hike to make a real difference to a grieving child’s life.

You will experience the magic of a Brecon Beacons sunrise from the summit of Pen y Fan, South Wales’ highest peak. Starting before dawn from Storey Arms, you’ll climb under starlight with headtorches guiding the way, making this adventure all the more memorable. The steady ascent suits all fitness levels and rewards you with breathtaking views as the sun breaks over the mountains.

Distance: 4.9 Miles / 7.8 Km

Start Time: 0300 hrs Finish Time: 0700 hrs

Time: 3 – 4 Hours

Ascent: 541m / 1777ft

Start/Finish Point: Pont ar Daf National Trust Car Park

ASCENT

We begin our ascent of Pen-y-Fan from the Pont ar Daf National Trust Car Park just south east of the Storey Arms Outdoor Centre.

The walk in daylight is a very straightforward one as the paths are well maintained and very wide in places. However, for our sunrise summit attempt we are walking in the dark so care and attention is needed at all times especially around the summit area and on the descent around Corn Ddu.

Crossing the Pont ar Daf and picking up the Beacons Way national trail we wind our way up past waterfalls climbing quite steeply before we arrive at Blwch Duwynt which is at 2.5km into our route.

By the time we reach the Bwlch most of the height gain has been achieved as we are now at 814m with only 72m left to climb!

The final 1km of walking is relatively straightforward as we contour around the cliff face of Corn Ddu (Black Horn) to reach the summit of Pen-y-Fan 886m with its well-preserved Bronze aged cairn.

DESCENT

Our descent begins by retracing our steps for 0.5km to an intersection of paths just below Corn Ddu. Instead of continuing down our ascent route we take the path to the right below the cliff face of Craig Cwm Llwch.

After approximately 300m we pick up our descent route heading south west for 1.5km until we cross Blaen Taf Fawr. We then have a short uphill section before our final 1km of descent down behind the Storey Arms.

Once back we pick up the path that runs parallel with the road for our final 1km walk back to the starting point.

Cardiff Half Marathon

Join Team Winston for the Cardiff Half Marathon!

The Cardiff Half Marathon has grown into one of the largest and most exciting road races in the United Kingdom; and is truly a Race For Everyone. It is now one of Europe’s largest half marathons and is Wales’ largest mass participation and multi-charity fundraising event. The event has grown significantly since it was founded in 2003 when 1,500 runners took part – it now attracts a mass race field of over 27,500 registered runners alongside world-class athletes in a trio of fiercely contested men’s, women’s and wheelchair elite races. Its flat, fast course passes all of the city’s most breathtaking scenery and iconic landmarks including Cardiff Castle, the Principality Stadium, Wales Millennium Centre and stunning Cardiff Bay.

Trekking Mount Snowdon (1,085m) during the daytime forms a great challenge, but using torches to light your way and having the moon as your backdrop, summiting at night brings another sense of achievement to an already recognised charity trek.
Seeing the sunrise across Snowdonia National Park will be a memory never forgotten! Upon our descent, we will witness the breathtaking mountain range open up to give glorious views and afterwards we tuck into a delicious celebration breakfast!
